How to Refinish Your Old Wood Dresser

Knowing how to refinish old wood dresser is important to avoid replacing your antique or pressed furniture by buying new one. Yes, it can save your bucks particularly if you have spare time to do this DIY project, perhaps in weekend.

Although, people may thinks this is complicated project but it can make you creative by trying to add decoration and style as well getting stain veneer for new color scheme on your wood dresser, like painting wood paneling. Here are steps-by-steps that can guide you to renew and refresh the look of dresser with new coat or paint.

Making complete preparation


Here are things and proper tools you need on this refinishing project: chemical stripper, dish detergent, drop-cloths, water, bucket, paint or spray for staining, 80-grit sandpaper, plastic scraper, paintbrush and sponge. Next step to do is to cover your working area by using plastic tarps or cloths so you can unscrew and remove the drawer.

Making cleaning and applying chemical stripper


By using clean drop cloths with combination warm water and dish detergent, you can wipe and scrub the dresser based on wood grain and let it completely dry. Then you can apply chemical stripper with brush for one-two coating process by scraping old paint with plastic scraper on dresser and drawer fronts. Do careful sanding and wipe away the dust by using cloth, and sandpaper to get smooth finish on the entire surface.

Making painting for coating

You can use brush to paint to feather the edge, new layer and make thicker for the coat of stain. Before sanding it lightly, you can apply spray paint to add extra protection and depth of color. After letting the paint and coating dry, you can replace the drawers and screw it back on dresser. For your health, it is advised to do the staining or painting process in well-ventilated area.
